The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
