Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
