Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
